Study Permit

A study permit is granted to foreign nationals with a valid letter of acceptance from Designated Learning Institutions (DLI). To enter Canada to study, foreign nationals require a visitor visa, which will be issued upon applying for a study permit.

International Students can work on a study permit if their permits list a condition of work allowed on or off campus. During their studies, students can work up to 20 hours per week. Students on summer or winter break can work full-time hours. Self-employed students must ensure they are complying with the conditions of their study permit.

Students can apply for a post-graduate work permit (PGWP) to obtain an open work permit once they have graduated from a Canadian designated learning institution. Students have up to 180 days after graduating to apply for a PGWP. Once a submission has been made, they can continue to work while waiting for a decision on their work permit.
