Family Sponsorship

A person at least 18 years old and is a Canadian permanent resident or a Canadian citizen can sponsor a  particular relative.

You can sponsor your spouse; the marriage must be legal, and the spouse must be at least 18 years old. To sponsor a common-law partner, ensure you have been living together for one year without any long periods apart.

Spouses being sponsored inside Canada can apply for an Open Work Permit as part of their sponsorship application.

Dependent children must be under the age of 22 and do not have a spouse or common-law partner. Children over 22 years old can only qualify as a dependent if they are unable to financially support themselves because of a mental or physical condition, and have been dependent on their parents financially before the age of 22.

A permanent resident of Canada can also sponsor their children and grandchildren. You can add the grandchild as a dependent in the application.

Sponsoring your parents and grandparents

Canadian Permanent Residents or Canadian Citizens who are at least 18 years old and live in Canada can sponsor their own (take out) parent(s) and grandparents. The individual must be invited to apply and ensure they have enough funds to support their family member. Individuals who are married can combine incomes with their spouse, which their spouse will be co-signing on the application.
